Public Relations, Media & Advocacy (PRMA) Update
With male sexuality, power, privilege and non-consensual sex offenses continuing to make headlines, I'm pleased that AASECT has been able to provide some much needed insight to the Media, particularly when unequivocally clarifying that the abuses we've been seeing do NOT constitute sex addiction nor is sex addiction therapy a valid way of conceptualizing treatment for these offenders and their offenses. Additionally, AASECT's position statement on sex addiction continues to be a foundational article in the larger cultural reconceptualization of how society views and treats out of control sexual behaviors. Recently, The Center for Positive Sexuality, National Coalition for Sexual Freedom and The Alternative Sexualities Health Research Alliance published a joint statement opposing sex/porn addiction model and these organizations cited AASECT's statement as one of the reasons for their joint statement. As we venture into the new year, we will continue to seek out strategic opportunities for AASECT's voice to be heard in the media to also respond to timely media inquiries through our dedicated press listerv.
