From the President's Desk - March 2016

Welcome to our inaugural revised edition of Contemporary Sexuality!  We made the change from the previous version once we began tracking the number of readers and realized that only a small portion of our members were reading it. Since there is no reason to publish something that our members are not using, we decided to try a more interactive newsletter with various types of content. We asked for your feedback and have tried to include what you asked for. Please feel free to give us more suggestions and feedback on what you would like to see in CS. We aim to please!!

This is a very busy time of year for AASECT. All the plans for the Annual Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico are being finalized. Our co-chairs have spent thousands of hours planning and creating innovative programming. Check the conference website occasionally to see the program updates and any new additions.

I know that for some of you, the Zika virus is a concern. We have been monitoring closely the information from Puerto Rico, taking preventative measures as well receiving all the information from the Centers For Disease Control. We will be posting regular updates on the conference website. At the present time, the hotel in Puerto Rico is providing guests with mosquito spray when they leave the hotel, and the government in Puerto Rico is fumigating the entire island. All of the AASECT conference events are being held indoors, so that our exposure during the meeting is minimal.

Nominations for our Annual Awards were due March 15, 2016. The Awards committee will be busy for the next month reading the books and studying the nominations supporting the individual awards. Instead of having an Award’s luncheon this year, the awards will be conferred/bestowed through out the conference before plenary sessions. We hope this will provide all of our members an opportunity to meet those honored throughout the conference.

The Nominations committee under the direction of our Past President, Michelle Sugg, has spent the last several months identifying and inviting members to lead AASECT in the future. The 2016 elections are under way and our members should have all received the ballot and be voting for new officers. I hope you will read their biographies and determine who you would like to represent you in our organization.

One of the other positions that will be changing this year is that of the Listserve Moderator. After four years with an individual moderator we decided that since the position is a huge amount of work for one person, the Communications Chair, Sara Nasserzadeh, is putting together a committee to handle the daily work of moderating our list serve. You will hear more from this committee in the future. Thank you to all who volunteered. If you are not already on the list serve but would like to be, contact Amanda at

50th Anniversary Committee needed!   Next year, 2017 is the 50th Anniversary of the official founding of AASECT. The event will be celebrated at the Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, June 16-18, 2017. Since our request for volunteers was overwhelming for the listserve moderator, we decided to do a shout out for those interested in being on this committee. Bring your history, your creativity, your fresh youthful ideas and anything else you would like to contribute to this event. Contact Executive Director, Michael Chan, at, with your “I want to volunteer” hat on!!
