Sallie Foley, LMSW, is an AASECT certified sex therapist, sexuality educator, and supervisor. She is honored to be Certification Chair for AASECT.  Sallie has been a member of AASECT since the 1980’s, has presented papers and led supervision workshops at AAECT, served on the sex therapy certification committee, and served as Director for Communications on the Board. She has been the director of University of Michigan Sexual Health Certificate Program since 2009 and is the former director of the University of Michigan center for sexual health (1998-2010). She has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sexuality Education and reviews manuscripts for the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics and other publications.. Her research and teaching interests include impact of chronic illness on sexual health concerns, HIV/AIDS reduction strategies, and teaching health care providers about sexual health.

A particular passion has been Intersex issues. She published an article with George Morley, MD, “Care and Counseling of the Patient with Vaginal Agenesis’, that led to the North American Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Society’s adoption of new standards of care for MRKH patients—replacing surgeries to create vaginas for young girls with MRKH with a combination of sexuality education and counseling for both the young woman with MRKH and her parents.

For many years, Sallie was on the board of the Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) and helped write the booklets on DSD/Parents Guide and DSD/For Pediatricians  (funded by a Kaiser Permanente grant) available at accordalliance.org today.

She is on faculty at the University Of Michigan School Of Social Work. She also has a private psychotherapy practice in Ann Arbor, MI. She has written chapters and articles about the treatment of sexual difficulties and co-authored Sex Matters for Women: A Complete Guide to Taking Care of Your Sexual Self (Foley, Kope, & Sugrue, 2nd edition, Guilford, 2012). This book won the SSTAR award for best consumer sexual health book of 2013. Her book, Modern Love: A no-nonsense guide to a life of passion (Sterling, 2006) was based on her column “Modern Love” in the nationally circulated AARP the Magazine.
