Welcome AASECT's New Professional Education Steering Committee Chair - Prem Pahwa, LCSW, CST

Welcome AASECT's new Professional Education Steering Committee Chair - Prem Pahwa, LCSW, CST.

I am excited to be joining the Board of Directors of AASECT and to be the new Chair of the Professional Education Steering Committee. It is a privilege to serve the organization and my fellow members. I would like to share with you all a little bit about who I am and what I hope to accomplish while in this role.

Currently in my career I wear multiple hats. My strongest professional identity is as a clinician. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. I have been in private practice since 2002 working with a very diverse client population. I am starting my sixth year as full time faculty in the graduate Counseling / Clinical Mental Health program at DePaul University in Chicago. My formal training in Sexual Health was through the University of Michigan Sexual Health Program, where I am now Core Faculty and Assistant Program Director.

The previous PESC Chair, Dr. Susan Stiritz, and CE Chair, Dr. Sally Valentine,  worked tirelessly and diligently to revise the system of applying and approving continuing education credits. I intend to build on their hard work and efficiency to keep the process flowing smoothly and quickly. I believe it is important to make as many quality continuing education opportunities available to all of our members, and hope to keep looking for ways to reduce barriers for members wishing to provide these opportunities. I would like to work to increase opportunities for members to deepen their knowledge and skills in the intersections of social justice and sexual health.

I also intend to build on the work that has been done in examining the role of the SAR within AASECT. Working collaboratively with those members who have invested time, effort, and energy into researching and studying the impact of the SAR, I hope to develop best practices for using SARs in the education of our members, as well as for practitioners providing SARs.

The Summer and Winter Institutes, held semiannually, have become an opportunity for AASECT to provide in-depth learning and a forum for participants and ‘experts’ to work together closely.  Collaborating with the Institutes Steering Committee and our AASECT Members, I plan to offer Institutes that address our members’ current clinical and educational interests and needs in ways that will be inclusive of multiple perspectives, experiences, realities, and truths.  I will continue to design the Institutes to be of interest for clinicians and educators.

As we go to Las Vegas in June to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of AASECT, I am hoping to play a vital part in creating a celebratory event at our Annual Conference. An event that acknowledges the hard work and pioneering efforts that have gone into creating our wonderful ‘home’, while also setting the tone for the next fifty years, in which we as a community are able to help more people and communities gain access to sexual health education and services.

Thank you,

Prem Pahwa, LCSW, CST, Professional Education Steering Committee Chair
